Basics / FAQs / Forms and Resources

1. Are USDA standards (NOP final rule) equivalent to the standards laid down by the European Council regulation on organic trade (EEC no. 2092/91)?

No! Under QAI's current certification program, your company's organic compliance has been evaluated according to U.S. organic standards only. Your company's EU compliance status has not been determined until you have requested and received confirmation of your company's status from QAI.

2. How can I acquire QAI approved documentation for my shipments to the EU or for my customers who wish to ship to the EU?

If your company intends to ship to the EU or to sell raw materials to a processor or manufacturer that ships to the EU, you will be required to document your company's compliance with the EU regulation 2092/91. QAI will not be able to approve a European Community Transaction Certificate (also referred to as a "Certificate of Inspection for Import of Products from Organic Production" or "ECC") or to provide statements of EU regulation compliance for any of its clients that have not completed an EU Regulation Compliance Plan.

3. What is an EU Regulation Compliance Plan?

QAI has introduced a new streamlined certification format for its clients that intend to ship goods to countries in the European Union (EU). This convenient "Compliance Plan" format will guide you through the items that are not covered by the NOP but are required by the EU regulation 2092/91. The plan will allow you to quickly and accurately assess your company's ability to comply with EU regulation 2092/91. If you wish to obtain a copy of this plan, please contact Kathleen Downey at 858.792.3531 or by e-mail.

4. Is QAI accredited?

YES! QAI is accredited by:

  • The USDA to ISO 65 and NOP criteria
  • The Conseil D'Accreditation Du Québec (CAQ) to the ISO 65 criteria with reference to CODEX
  • The Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (MAFF) in Japan to JAS organic standards
  • QAI has recently earned IFOAM accreditation. (For more information, refer to the IFOAM website.)
